SADC Election Observer Mission consults DWF on SA elections

Representatives of the Southern African Development Community Elections Observer Mission to South Africa visited the Democracy Works Foundation offices on 7 May 2019, before the big day – the 2019 National Elections.

Democracy Works Foundation Executive Chairperson William Gumede gave the mission representatives a briefing about the state of the South African democracy, democratic institutions and political parties. He also briefed the representatives on the possible challenges, high risks areas and issues that may crop up on voting day and the immediate aftermath.

Representatives from the mission, ahead of the elections, met with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), political party leaders and key civil society organisations to assess the state of readiness for the elections.

Traditionally, only government representatives formed part of official African regional and continental observer missions. Democracy Works Foundation encourages civil society organisations to be part of election observer missions in Africa.
