Democracy Works Foundation recently attended and contributed to the Youth Activism Programme at the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation held on Friday, 24 May 2024. The Civil Society #UndecidedVotersChillas is an event aimed at engaging young people in critical discussions surrounding their role in shaping democratic processes, at the Ubuntu Hub in Braamfontein the gathering brought together a diverse group of youth from various regions in Gauteng.
The event served as a platform for open dialogue and reflection on the 2024 National and Provincial Elections and the broader implications of youth participation in democratic governance. With attendees hailing from Tshwane, Ekurhuleni, Sedibeng, Johannesburg and West Rand, each representing distinct communities and lived experiences, the discussions were rich with perspectives that highlighted the complexities of decision-making in the electoral process.
Throughout the event, participants engaged in collaborative exercises aimed at exploring ways to foster active citizenship and promote youth involvement in civic affairs beyond the election cycle. From mapping out strategies for community organising to envisioning post-election accountability measures, the conversations underscored the importance of youth-driven initiatives in building a more inclusive and responsive democracy.
“This event speaks to one of our 4 impact areas and pillars that our Foundation is built on: strengthening Citizens & Leaders and Democratic Culture. We believe that democracies cannot be healthy and flourish without active citizens, particularly youth, who can participate in society, solve problems their communities face, and stay informed and skilled in participation. We believe it is equally important to provide platforms for the open exchange of ideas and to help build a culture of consensus with our young people,” said Ujen Dookie, DWF Programme Administrator.
Central to the success of the Civil Society #UndecidedVotersChillas was the invaluable contribution of partner organisations such as the Democracy Works Foundation, said Obakeng Kgatshe, Youth Activism Programme Manager at the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation.
“We are profoundly thankful to Democracy Works Foundation for being part of our Civil Society #UndecidedVotersWorkshop. We remain grateful for your own dedication to democracy building and activating youth participation through the Democracy Works Academy,” Kgatshe said.
Through a commitment to youth participation and democratic values, Democracy Works Foundation collaborates with organisations like the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation and other partners to inspire a youth participation in the democratic process.
